Bad Chinese Names

6 Tips to Avoid Bad Chinese Names
and Choose Better Names

Parents selecting names for their babies must avoid these bad Chinese names.

Here are 6 simple tips that help you prevent those deadly mistakes. And your children will not be stuck with inauspicious Chinese names for the rest of their lives.

Mistake #1: Difficulty in differentiating the gender. How many times have you called out a name expecting a boy to respond? But a girl answered instead. A girl's name must sound tender, pretty and lady-like. A boy's name, the opposite - manly, tough and heroic. Choose names that are suitable according to the gender.

Mistake #2: Going overboard. There are limits in everything.Too much of a good thing is a bad thing. For example, the name 陈刚强 Chen Gangqiang. Chen is the surname. The name is 刚强 Gangqiang. Gang means hard, tough and strong. Qiang means strong, powerful and energetic. This name then becomes Chen+Strong+Strong. Avoid over-emphasizing certain virtue in the name.

Mistake #3: Using a sage's name. We are taught to respect our ancestors and ancient sages. However, do not think it is respectful to use their names. It might actually be disrespectful because who can live up the sages' good reputation? Have confidence in your own self and name. Wear your own name proudly. Choose a name that is unique for your child.

Mistake #4: Negative and superficial meanings in the name. The last sentence is self-explaining. These names will give a poor impression and make a person looks unintelligent. For example, the name 李一才 Li Yicai. The form is too simplistic. The meaning is superficial. Choose names with good meanings and form.

Mistake #5: Vulgar. Avoid names that have vulgar meanings. Or sounding close to some vulgar meanings.

Mistake #6: Using uncommon characters. Uncommon characters may not be easy to read. It may even be wrongly pronounced. Avoiding such characters will avoid unnecessary problem. It may cause late processing of your documentation. Imagine the data entry personnel figuring how to spell out the pinyin pronunciation to key into the computer database. Choose characters that are standard and common but meaningful.
