Why do we calculate Chinese name strokes? Why is emphasis given on name strokes?

I don't really know where it all began. From what I have read, it could have even be a Japanese who had started the systematic method.

See the Chinese name strokes method on choosing Chinese baby name.

Actually, calculating Chinese characters strokes could have originated from Chinese dictionary. There are so many characters in Chinese. Thousands of them. It would be a nightmare to look for a character in the dictionary without proper categorization.

The categorization of Chinese characters in Chinese dictionary is different from an English dictionary. A character can be searched in two ways.

Let's say we want to learn the meaning of this character and how to read it - 铖.

Way number 1 - the traditional way

a. We look at the radical. All characters have a radical. In this case, it is 金 jīn.

b. Next we calculate the strokes of the right part of the character. 成 chéng has 6 strokes. Then we look under the listing of 金 jīn. And go to all the characters listed under 6 strokes.

There are many characters with 6 strokes with the radical 金 jīn. Finally, we found the character 铖 chéng. And the dictionary will show which page to refer to. Going to that page, you will find the meaning and how to read it.

Way number 2 - the modern way

The newer dictionaries now list the Chinese characters in Roman alphabetical order. Now, you can thumb through the pages to C to look for chéng. It will start from ca, then slowly to cha. To chao, chen and then cheng. On that page, you can find the character that we are looking for.

From these name strokes, I guess the Chinese later incorporated the 5 elements, yijing, astrology and numerology. Thus the art of Chinese naming method according to calculation of Chinese name strokes is born.
