The 'Chinese 24 solar terms' is a chart on the seasons on Earth. It is traditionally used by farmers to track the four seasons.

From one solar term to the other is 15° on the Earth's longitude.


Spring

立春 lìchūn. 315°. Start of spring. February 4.
雨水 yǔshuǐ. 330°. Rain water. February 19.

惊蛰 jīngzhé. 345°. Awakening of insects. March 6.
春分 chūnfēn. 0°. Vernal equinox. March 21.

清明 qīngmíng. 15°. Clear and bright. April 5.
谷雨 gǔyǔ. 30°. Grain rain. April 20.


Summer

立夏 lìxià. 45°. Start of summer. May 6.
小满 xiǎomǎn. 60°. Grain full. May 21.

芒种 mángzhòng. 75°. Grain in ear. June 6.
夏至 xiàzhì. 90°. Summer solstice. June 21.

小暑 xiǎoshǔ. 105°. Minor heat. July 7.
大暑 dàshǔ. 120°. Major heat. July 23.


Autumn

立秋 lìqiū. 135°. Start of autumn. August 8.
处暑 chǔshǔ. 150°. Limit of heat. August 23.

白露 báilù. 165°. White dew. September 8.
秋分 qiūfēn. 180°. Autumnal equinox. September 23.

寒露 hánlù. 195°. Cold dew. October 8.
霜降 shuāngjiàng. 210°. Frost descent. October 23.


Winter

立冬 lìdōng. 225°. Start of winter. November 7.
小雪 xiǎoxuě. 240°. Minor snow. November 22.

大雪 dàxuě. 255°. Major snow. December 7.
冬至 dōngzhì. 270°. Winter solstice. December 22.

小寒 xiǎohán. 285°. Minor cold. January 6.
大寒 dàhán. 300°. Major cold. January 20.

Alright, so how do we use the Chinese 24 solar terms in selecting Chinese names? On a simpler level, some parents name their child according to season.

For example, babies born in Spring: 三春 Sānchūn, 春丽 Chūnlì, 孝清 Xiàoqīng.

Summer: 丽夏 Lìxià, 清夏 Qīngxià, 小满 Xiǎomǎn

Autumn: 金秋 Jīnqiū.

Winter: 元冬 Yuándōng, 雪慧 Xuěhuì.
