A Quick Guide To Understanding Chinese Baby Names

Chinese Baby On Board

How To Choose A
Unique Name For Your Baby

Yes, there are thousands of Chinese baby names. How did I choose the one that is right for my son?

At this point, you may have surfed through many web pages for baby names. Looked at numerous name databases. Even at the sun for inspiration. Or the nature. There are people's names who mean Bright Sun or Mountain Village. Whatever makes you happy, right?

3 Parts

First things first. Let us understand the order of Chinese baby names. It consists of 3 parts:
  1. The Chinese family name or the surname
  2. A middle name or a generation name
  3. The given name
In the Chinese culture, the family name comes first. Next comes the generation name. Then the given name. Since the family name or surname is pretty fixed (it usually follows the father's surname), our focus then is on the generation name and given name.

Sounds Right

Still, does the given name sounds right when you put it together with your surname and middle name? We read the surname first, then the middle and given name. Sounds okay?

Baby girls usually have flowers characters in their names. Parents think that flowers are feminine for the girls. However, there are times these names are not favorable.

Baby boys, on the other hand, have masculine characters in their names. Some Chinese words have strong masculine symbols or characters in them. But when they are read together with the surname and middle name, they may sound weird. Or sound feminine.

Yin Yang

The Chinese baby names for boys and girls are different like the yin and yang. Day and night. A good name is one that you clearly know it's a male or female name. And not doubt about its gender.

With the endless possible combinations of Chinese words to form the middle name and given name, what then is the right one for your baby? How are you going to name your baby? Is that a name you yourself are proud to have for the rest of your life? Think about your own name. Are you happy with your parents' choice? And now it's your turn to name your baby. Choose well.

So you see? Choosing the right Chinese baby name is surely not as simple as picking a dish from a Chinese restaurant menu. Not everyone likes fried rice. Wish it was that simple.

Anyhow, following a tried and tested way, you will eventually get a baby name that is unique and great. You will also learn some advanced methods here on this website. And more.
