Chinese Family Names






What are the 100 most common Chinese family names? People usually mistaken a Chinese book as a listing of the 100 most common family names.

There is a book written during China's Northern Song Dynasty period (960-1127) known as 百家姓 bǎijiāxìng (100 Families Surnames). It listed a collection of Chinese surnames or family names. The Chinese family names are not listed according to the number of people with the names. It lists the names in a smooth and easy way to read.

Despite the book's name, there are actually more than 100 surnames listed in it. Over the years, more surnames were added into the book. Today, there are 444 single character surnames (单姓 dānxìng) and 60 double character surnames (复姓 fùxìng) in that book. In reality, there are thousands of surnames.

In 2006, China Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology carried out a research. They have listed the results of the 100 most common families' surnames in China. In descending order, they are:
