Calculating Chinese Names Strokes
For The Best Name

Calculate Written In Chinese

Calculating Chinese names strokes is an important part in the art of naming babies. This is based on the elements suitable for the person. From the year pillar (the Chinese year a person is born in) we can find out the best elements for the person.

Different number of strokes suit different people. It is a misconception to think that certain number brings bad luck. Numbers are just numbers. Just like a color is a color. There is no good color and bad color. Everyone is attracted to a different color and each of us has our own favorite color.

Each number from 1 to 10 is just a number. None is better than the other. There is no preference in calculating Chinese names strokes on the number. It all depends on what is the best element for the person.

Note that in counting the strokes, we based it on Chinese Traditional writing.

5 Frames Strokes Counting Method For Chinese Names Strokes

There are 5 parts to look at in the Chinese name. They are divided into frames.

1. Heavenly Frame
  • Single character surname - count the number of strokes in the character, and add 1 to make up the total in Heavenly Frame.
  • Multiple characters surname - add up the total number of strokes to make up the total in Heavenly Frame.
2. Human Frame
  • Add up the total number of strokes in the surname and the first character in the given name. Given name usually has two characters, and sometimes only one. When there are two characters, it may sometimes includes a generation name.
3. Earthly Frame
  • Single character given name - count the number of strokes in the character, and add 1 to make up the total in Earthly Frame.
  • Multiple characters given name - add up all the strokes as the Earthly Frame number.
4. External Frame
  • Single character given name and single character surname - the External Frame number is fixed as 2.
  • Others - add the number of strokes in the last character in the given name with 1 to make up the External Frame total.
5. Total Frame
  • Take the total number of strokes in all the characters of surname and given name.

Some further notes on Chinese names strokes. If you have double characters given name, it is better to have the second character with more number of strokes than the first one. This second character with more number of strokes acts as a more solid foundation to the first character. This however is not usually practiced even by those so-called masters. However, I strongly suggest it. It has better value to the overall name and luck. Also, when the name is written, it is aesthetically more appealing.

Sometimes the first character in the given name has more strokes than the second character. This gives a feeling of top-heavy, or in Chinese we say 'head heavy legs light'.

In Chinese names strokes numerology, the numbers have their own elements.

The elements must all be in harmony with each other especially the numbers in Heavenly, Human and Earthly Frames.

Also, using the numbers in some of the frames, I will translate them to the trigrams in Yijing. This will further help to confirm that the name is really a good one for the person. This belongs to a more advanced step. Actually, there are many other things to check to fully calculate the best name. Number of strokes are just one part of the overall art of Chinese name selection.

The method described in this page is one of the ways of name strokes selection. This is the most common method. However, there is another method. I find the other method more 'powerful' and suits the person better.
