The Chinese years are actually made up of two characters. The character on the left is called the Heavenly Stems. The characters on the right is known as Earthly branches.

There are ten Heavenly Stems. Each of them has its yin or yang element:

甲 Jia - yang wood
乙 Yi - yin wood
丙 Bing - yang fire
丁 Ding - yin fire
戊 Wu - yang earth
己 Ji - yin earth
庚 Geng - yang metal
幸 Xing - yin metal
壬 Ren - yang water
癸 Gui - yin water

There are twelve Earthly Branches. Each also has its own yin or yang element:

子 Zi / Rat - yang water
丑 Chou / Ox - yin earth
寅 Yin / Tiger - yang wood
卯 Mao / Rabbit - yin wood
辰 Chen / Dragon - yang earth
巳 Si / Snake - yin fire
午 Wu / Horse - yang fire
未 Wei / Goat - yin earth
申 Shen / Monkey - yang metal
酉 You / Rooster - yin metal
戍 Xu / Dog - yang earth
亥 Gui / Pig - yin water

The yang Heavenly Stems match with the yang Earthly Branches. The yin Heavenly Stems match with the yin Earthly Branches.

When a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch combines to become a pillar, another element is formed. This is called the Nayin 纳音. In the Chinese years table above, you can see the Nayin element written in brackets.

Nayin is also known as Life Element or Heavenly Luck. It is commonly used in Feng Shui practice. Of course, in the art of Chinese names selection, we also need to refer to Nayin. The Nayin in the Chinese years plays an important part in the Chinese names. They give the elements that we need to pay attention to, and incorporate in the calculation of number of strokes.
