A Special Connection Of
Chinese Zodiac Signs
With Your Name

Chinese Zodiac Papercut

The 12 Chinese Zodiac Signs or zodiac animals are collectively known as shengxiao 生肖 in Chinese. Technically, in ancient Chinese astrology lingo, it is the twelve earthly branches or dizhi 地支. That is what advanced astrology practitioners will call them.

How did the earthly branches then become animals? There are a few theories regarding this. I believe the ancient Chinese wanted their students to remember the sequence easily. And so they came up with the zodiac animals best related to the characteristics and personalities of each sign.

As a matter of fact, the zodiac symbols written in Chinese do not sound even close to the animals when you read them!

See how the twelve earthly branches are written and read. Compare with how you would call the animals names in Chinese.

Earthly Branches - Zodiac Animals
子 (zi) - 鼠 (shu) rat
丑 (chou) - 牛 (niu) ox
寅 (yin) - 虎 (hu) tiger
卯 (mao) - 兔 (tu) rabbit
辰 (chen) - 龙 (long) dragon
巳 (si) - 蛇 (she) snake
午 (wu) - 马 (ma) horse
未 (wei) - 羊 (yang) ram
申 (shen) - 猴 (hou) monkey
酉 (you) - 鸡 (ji) rooster
戌 (xu) - 狗 (gou) dog
亥 (hai) - 猪 (zhu) pig

Another theory suggests that the origin of the Chinese Zodiac Signs is - well - not Chinese. This is because of how different they read compared to the animals in Chinese.

The Connection With Chinese Names

Each zodiac sign has its own element. So we have to match the Chinese word with the baby's zodiac.

For instance, the you earthly branch 酉 (rooster) has yin metal element. Thus, we can find a word that has the metal symbol 金 or earth symbol 土 (earth produces metal in the five elements theory) in it. This is just one suggestion. There are also hundreds more words that are suitable for the rooster year born baby.

Of course, using the Chinese zodiac signs is just one part of whole naming method. There are other considerations too. The yin and yang concept. The Five Elements theory. The Heavenly Stems. The combination of both Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches producing a totally new element. You will slowly learn all these.
