They are based on the elements that the zodiac carries; the elements in the characters that are suitable for the zodiac; and also some are based on the meaning of the characters that are suitable for the animal.
Before we start, do you already know your Chinese zodiac?
Let's say you are born in the year of Rat. Then the characters listed under Rat are suitable for you. Some of these are radicals that form part of the overall Chinese characters.
For example, 氵 is a radical (it means water). It is not a Chinese character that is used in normal writing. When this radical is combined with another part, it will form a character. Such as 氵+ 永 becomes 泳 yǒng (swim).
