Free Online English Chinese Dictionary

There is a free English Chinese dictionary by Google. What else does Google not have? Anyway, it's wonderful. I like it.

Here's the answer to those who have asked me "How to write my English name in Chinese?" Or "Please translate my English name to Chinese."

You can now have English names translated to Chinese characters.

The link is at http://translate.google.com. It will open in another window.

How to use

To translate from English to Chinese, select 'English' in 'From:'.
Next, select either 'Chinese (Traditional)' or 'Chinese (Simplified)' in 'To:'.

That's it. You are now ready to translate your English name to Chinese. Thanks to this online dictionary.

Using Google Chrome browser, as I typed in an English word or name, the translation automatically appears. Amazing. You don't even have to press the Enter key or click on the 'Translate' button.

Try it. I have tried some common English names and the results look fine. It's not perfect though. Some names translation do not sound right in Chinese.

Pronouncing it - to see how to pronounce the result you get, click on 'Ä' once.

Under the Chinese words you can now see the Pinyin pronunciation. When I typed in 'John', the romanization given was 'yuē hàn'. This is how the Chinese translate the name John. I know it doesn't sound right. This is because of the limitation in Chinese syllables. There is no J sound like in John.

Listen - to listen to how the word is said, click on the speaker button next to 'Ä'.

Besides translating your English name, you can also use this free Google Dictionary to translate a sentence, a whole webpage or a document. You can translate to any other languages available there besides Chinese.
