Frans van Terwisga

by Frans
(The Netherlands)

Called by friends: Frans
Gender: Male
Country of Origin: The Netherlands
Date of Birth: **removed**
Meanings: thoughtful, intelligence

Ding writes:

Your name Frans is usually transliterated in Chinese as 弗兰斯 Fú lán sī or 弗朗斯 fú lǎng sī.

They are not very meaningful.

A better and more meaningful Chinese name for Frans will be 福朗思 fú lǎng sī. It has the same pronunciation with the one above 弗朗斯. However the Chinese characters are changed to have better meaning.

The meaning:

福 Fú means good fortune.

朗 Lǎng means bright and clear.

思 Sī means think or thought when it is combined with another character. For example, 思想 sīxiǎng means thoughts.

Put these three characters together, now they become a meaningful Chinese name. A good fortune person who has bright ideas and thoughts.

Frans, hope you like it.

fu stroke count is 13 not 14
by: Frans

Hi Ding,

I was pointed to a chinese colleague that fu 福 has 13 strokes not 14.

I'll look into it further.

Ding writes:

You are correct. Most people see fu 福 as 13 strokes.

I based it on the traditional Chinese dictionary's stroke count. The left radical 示 is 5 strokes. And the right part 畐 is another 9 strokes. Adding them together become 14 strokes.

Thanks for the explanation
by: Frans

Hi Ding,

Of course! I forgot...
You need to use the traditional chinese characters to count the strokes!
I used the simplified ones. My bad... >.<

Thanks for the more elaborate explanation. This gives me more confidence in this name.
I'm looking for a chinese name for business purposes so I wanted to be sure this would be the best option.

Thanks again!

reading your website
by: Frans

Hi.

For chinese name I read on your site you need ying yang yang, ying ying yang, yang ying ying or yang yang ying in your name.

Where ying = even and yang = odd number of strokes.

When I check my chinese name given its yang yang yang.
I like to know how to find the right chinese name in accordance with my day of birth.

Thanks anyway. It sounds like a cute name.

Ding writes:

Frans, thanks for your comments.

The number of strokes that I get are:

福 14 strokes
朗 10 strokes
思 9 strokes

This will be ying ying yang according to what you described.

If you have read it from my site and get the impression the name has to be in those ying-yang sequence, then perhaps I have not been very clear in my explanation.

My method for strokes calculation however is not based on that. You can read more in 'choosing Chinese baby name'.

For English/Non-Chinese names translated to Chinese, I mostly go with good meaning in the characters. Less so on strokes count.

The reason for this is because of a few limitations.

The main limitation is finding good Chinese characters that sound very close to the original non-Chinese name. At times, a character that fits the stroke count may not have good meaning.

Ultimately, priority should be given to Chinese characters with good meaning.

See the importance of good names, words and sound.

To find the right Chinese name in accordance with day of birth, we have to look at the bazi (date of birth and time). This is another method. It looks at the season and strength in the elements. Then we will choose the Chinese characters that complement the season and elements.
