Ding writes:

The Chinese transliteration for John is 约翰 yuē hàn. This does not sound like John, more like Yohann.

And Jonathan in Chinese is 乔纳森 qiáo nà sēn.

For you, I have selected this...

俊汉 Jùn hàn, a two-character Chinese name. The second character has the same sound with the second character in 约翰 yuē hàn. But written differently. So Jun Han is like a close resemblance to how John is written in Chinese, Yue Han.

Meaning of this Chinese name:

俊 Jùn - Means pretty or handsome. To mean close to 'cute' and match the J sound in John, this word is the best.

汉 Hàn - This means man. The traditional Chinese writing is 漢.

So 俊汉 Jùn hàn means a handsome man.

I was wondering how the characters for Jon translate, as the imagery is rather different - the way I was shown was a double cross over the top, with a reverse K almost on th left side, and a cross with a flat line across the base as well on the right.

Pronounced more like 'Jong'

What you have described is one of the common transliteration for John. [http://www.nciku.com/search/zh/detail/%E5%BA%84/1320069] It is pronounced as 'zhuang' in Mandarin. 'Jong' is the Cantonese pronunciation. It means 'village, hamlet or villa'.

The characters that I have chosen here are more meaningful and unique to the person. Based on the request by the person, I select characters that are meaningful to them. This makes it unique to him.

I like this name! A different twist to the usual transliteration. Good work!
